PSOAS-The Great Mystery Muscle (WATCH MY VIDEO)

Everybody at some point in time has had some form of low back pain (if not, that’s great!). Could your low back pain be easily fixed just by having your Illiopsoas muscles released? And, what and where is your “psoas” muscle?

The “Psoas” is a muscle that originates at anterior lumbar transverse processes of the spine and inserts at the lesser trochanter of the femer bone. WHAT?This muscle is the strongest “hip flexor” in your body and it is located UNDER your abdominal muscles and attaches at the lower part of the spine and ends at the top of your femer (thigh) bone. It does hip flexion, meaning it helps bring the knee toward the chest. GOT IT?

For most people we don’t even realize that this muscle even exists, but in fact we use it all the time! If you are sitting down reading this, chances are that you have your psoas muscle engaged right now!

Okay so how does it get tight and cause low back pain?

In a word: SITTING! Most of us have jobs that require us to sit for long periods of time, which causes the psoas muscle to shorten and contract. This act of constant contraction causes the muscle to become tight, so that when one goes to stand, the psoas muscle is still pulling the spine toward the femer and the femer toward the spine. So essentially when you go to stand up, you SHOULD look like a walking greater than/less than symbol with legs! (<)

But…what your body does to correct this posture (<), WITHOUT YOU EVEN REALIZING IT, is it tightens up your LOWER BACK muscles to bring your back upright again! After a long period of the low back correcting this problem, it too becomes tight and painful!

So what is the moral of the story? Don’t sit for long hours? No! That’s part of your job and you have to do your job to provide for yourself. The answer is: STRETCH! You must give yourself a little bit of time EVERYDAY to stretch your psoas muscle, to prevent back pain and postural related problems.

If you need work quickly to release the psoas muscle and help your low back pain, we do offer massage therapy that can help with this immediately.

Happier than you know. With all the recent travel…and activity (snowboarding in Colorado for 4 days), my lower back has been feeling it pretty severely. Standing 6″ 5 and traveling for hours in a small plane seat didn’t help either. Thanks for the info Workout Boss…looking forward to implementing more stretching into my weekly routine at the gym…particularly the targeted areas mentioned in this post!
